SUMMER SAILING SCHOOL
Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club's Summer Sailing School offers CYA (Canadian
Yachting Association) courses for all levels of sailors, age 8 to 18 years
inclusive. CYA certified instructors teach both theory and on-the-water skills
in a fun, positive atmosphere. Courses available include:
Opti Junior: This entry level, pre-white sail course introduces kids
8 to 11 years old to the basics of messing around in boats. Safety and seamanship
are combined with basic sailing and rowing skills. We are offering this course
in weekly, all day sessions to maximize flexibility. Our fleet of new Optimist
dinghies will be used for this course.
White Sail Levels I to III: For the beginner and Opti Junior graduates.
Teaches basic sailing and boating safety. Our new Flying Junior, Pirate and
Optimists are the boats used. This two week, all day program is for kids,
age 10 and up, and allows the student to gain the next CYA level.
Bronze IV: Sailed in Lasers, Laser IIs, and 420s. More advanced sailing
techniques such as roll tacks, roll gybes and rudderless sailing are concentrated
on. This group should experience the thrill of planing. This is run on a two
week, all day basis.
Bronze V: The joys of the spinnaker and the trapeze get the most
performance possible out of the Laser IIs and 420s. Also runs two weeks, all
day.
Learn to Race: This course is all about racing. Racing rules, tactics,
and techniques to get you to the front of the fleet are taught. Lots of practice
racing Lasers, Laser IIs and 420s will hone your skills. Two weeks, all day.
